Euxton-born folk musician Phillip Henry and his girlfriend, Hannah Martin, have been named best duo at the 15th BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.

They collected the award at the Royal Albert Hall in London last night, seeing off tough competition from other folk duos.

The ceremony was presented by Radio 2 folk show host, Mark Radcliffe, and folk singer, Julie Fowlis, in front of an audience of more than 4,500 people.

Bob Shennan, controller of BBC Radio 2 and 6 Music, said: “Congratulations to everyone who won an award last night.

“It was a wonderful celebration and a reflection of just how vibrant the UK folk music scene is.”

Phillip and Hannah, who now live in Devon, were spotted by Steve Knightley, from folk band Show of Hands, and have since performed at venues around the world.

They have recently returned from a tour of Germany and the Netherlands and are about to start a 30-date tour of the UK.
