Tributes as Val loses cancer battle

Tributes have been paid to a great wife, mum, grandmother and work colleague after she lost her brave battle with cancer.

Val Prescott was the longest-serving member of staff at what is now Fairport Engineering Ltd.

She joined the company in 1974 when it was Leonard Fairclough Ltd and the firm's flag outside its headquarters in Market Place, Adlington, has been flying at half-mast as a mark of respect.

Val died at her home in Chorley after a brave battle against cancer. She was 62 and she was cared for by her husband of more than 40 years, Dave.

The funeral of the mother to grown up sons Richard and Anthony took place last Thursday week in Adlington.

Fairport's managing director Paul Fitton said: "Notwithstanding her support to the company's senior management Val also found other ways to contribute to the company by becoming a trained first aider in 1980.

"Moving across to Fairport Engineering Ltd on its establishment in 1982 Val continued to be the much valued, highly experienced and essential confidante to a succession of managing directors including Jim Banks, Tony Lees and myself.

"Val continued to work on after reaching the official retirement age."

He added: "Val's working life is fundamentally the history of our company.

"On a personal note we know only too well the difficult job that Val discharged supremely in her own under-stated yet authoritative and effective manner.

"Integrity and confidentiality combined with sensitivity and flexibility come high up on the list of essential qualities for PAs.

"We think that it is more than fair to say that Val had these in abundance – and then some to spare."

A statement from the family revealed that Val was born in Stockport and met her future husband Dave when they were just 16.

They were married on September 16, 1967 and after the arrival of their two sons they eventually moved to Castlehouse Lane, Adlington in 1973.

She began her love affair with Fairport soon afterwards and loved being a grandmother to Katherine, Michael, Hannah, Charlie and Chloe.

Tragically she was diagnosed as being terminally ill in January this year and with only months left to live she decided to spend them at home with here devoted husband Dave.
