Warning over tax refund scam
Residents in Chorley are being warned to be careful before giving out their bank details after reports of a council tax refund scam in the area.
A number of people have been contacted over the phone by a caller who says that their property has been re-banded and that they are due a refund.
The caller then asks for bank details in order to refund the money back to the customer's account.
Residents have also been approached by people door-knocking and asking the same questions.
Coun Kevin Joyce, Chorley Council's executive member (resources), said: "I would urge anyone who receives a phone call like this to be very cautious and only give out their bank details if they are certain that it is the council asking for the details over the phone.
"There are occasions when the council will ask for bank details for example to set up a direct debit or arrange a refund direct to the bank. However, customers usually contact the council to do this."
If anyone receives a suspicious call asking for bank details they should refuse to provide them, take the person's name and contact the council to verify the call is genuine on 01257 515151.
A similar scam was being run before Christmas.
