Wife's desperate plea over lack of life-saving care
'Just let me die.'
Those are the poignant words of a desperate Chorley pensioner whose family claim that she isn't getting the life-saving care she needs.
Eighty-three-year-old stroke victim Margaret Haydock, from Haweswater Avenue, is virtually bed ridden and requires round-the-clock care.
However, social services say she is only eligible for one and a half hours help a day so her 80-year-old husband John, who has heart problems, is forced to be her full-time carer.
He has even spent his life savings paying 1,000 a month for extra care but says it is still not enough and he fears his wife will not live much longer unless they get the help they desperately need.
"I just can't take any more," he said. "Margaret said to me, 'why don't you just let me die?'
"We used to be so happy but now her will is broken. I know we'll never get back to how things were but we should get some help.
"I have to care for her 24 hours a day. I can't even go out to the shops to get food for her because then she is left alone.
"All we get is one hour in the morning and half an hour a night.
Someone comes and gets her out of bed and them comes back at night to put her in bed. It's not enough - we need proper help."
Margaret, who used to work as a chartered accountant, suffered a stroke in 2000 and again in 2006. She cannot walk and is virtually bed ridden.
