Yobs warned off the buses

Yobs who target Chorley's buses are being warned: "There's no hiding place".

Police in the town are holding a week-long blitz called "Operation Diesel" to tackle anti-social behaviour and crime.

As part of a countywide initiative they have joined forces with Lancashire County Council's Safer Travel Unit and Trading Standards department.

They have stepped up patrols in and around the Chorley Interchange and are also travelling on buses to reassure passengers.

They are also tackling underage drinking and people buying alcohol for under 18s.

Community beat manager for Chorley town centre, PC Nic Lewis said: "There are complaints about anti-social behaviour on buses and the transport network generally.

"It's normally youths.

"Often it's just a case of showing off but other passengers can be intimidated.

"We have had a high visibility presence down at the interchange and we've also gone out on the buses, including at night.

"We're speaking to bus drivers and the public.

"Anyone who is caught causing trouble is being dealt with. That could include a stop and search.

"It's about providing reassurance to the public and it's very much a partnership approach."

David Woodrofe, manager for the Chorley Bus Interchange, said: "It is very reassuring for the public and sends out a message to people that they cannot abuse our British public transport system by doing illegal activities.

"We have got co-operation between the local police and the Lancashire Safer Travel Unit.

"If people feel safer and happier then it might encourage people to travel later at night.

"It is very rare that we catch anything, but on a previous operation a knife was discovered on a youth."
