Lots of time to sit and scare at annual festival

The scarecrows made their yearly appearance in Charnock Richard at the weekend.

The village’s annual Scarecrow Festival did not disappoint, as folk put their imaginations to the test and came up with some weird and wonderful creations again.

Ward councillor Paul Leadbetter said: “It went very well. Sunday seemed busier than Saturday, but we were blessed with the weather and fortunate people put their scarecrows out again.

“Last year, the then committee disbanded, so it wasn’t going to run this year, which personally I didn’t think was good, so we set up a new committee, about half a dozen of us. We just had a little different approach to it and it seems to have worked.”

There’s no theme, allowing residents, businesses, schools and churches to get stuck in and come up with their own designs.

“That helps it along because it gives it a little bit more variety,” said Paul.

Local organisations will benefit from the event, which is being planned for the same weekend next year.
