Police are appealing for witnesses after a road traffic collision claimed the life of a man.

The incident happened in the early hours of yesterday morning at around 3:45am on the A5106 Wigan Road at Coppull.

A green Ford Focus was travelling from Chorley towards Wigan when the vehicle lost control and collided with a stone gate entrance.

Sadly, the driver, a 23 year old man from Standish, died of his injuries.

The road was closed to allow accident investigators to carry out their work.

Sgt John Wharton from the road policing unit said: “I would appeal to anyone who was in the area at the time and who may have witnessed something to come forward and contact the police.

“This is a very difficult time for the man’s family and we have specially trained family liaison officers supporting them.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact Lancashire Police on 101.
