A man has been killed after being hit by a train in Lancashire.

Police were called to a stretch of track of the West Coast Mainline at Coppull, near Chorley, shortly before 9am on Saturday after receiving reports of a person being hit by a train.

They found the body of a man and the line was closed for more than an hour.

A British Transport Police spokesman said the death was being treated as “unexplained.”

She said: “The body of a man was discovered at the scene and officers from British Transport Police and Lancashire Police carried out an investigation.

“Inquiries are now continuing to establish the identity of the man.

“The incident is being treated as unexplained and a full report will be handed to the local coroner in due course.”

The closure led to services operating between Preston and Wigan North Western along the West Coast Mainline being replaced by buses throughout the period.

The line reopened at around 10.30am on Saturday
