A van has come off a motorway bridge and landed next to a main road underneath.

The emergency services were called at 10.20am today when the Mercedes Sprinter van landed on a grass verge next to Bolton Road, Anderton.

The van had been travelling northbound on the M61 motorway between junction six at Horwich and junction eight at Chorley.

The driver, a man in his 20s, was taken to Royal Preston Hospital by air ambulance for treatment to his injuries.

A barrier on the bridge was damaged, though it is not known if the van went over or crashed through the barrier.

One lane of the motorway has been closed because of the damage to the barrier, but a Highways Agency spokesman said it was not affecting traffic.
