Mayoralty runs in the family for June

It was certainly a case of like mother, like daughter for Chorley’s out going Mayor, June Molyneaux.

The Adlington and Anderton councillor chose her mother to be her mayoress - gracing her with the same honour that she had undertaken when Florence was Mayor back in 2000. It means that the pair feature twice in the gallery of Chorley’s first citizens that hangs in the Town Hall.

Speaking as she handed the chains to new Mayor, Coun John Walker, June said: “We were the first mother and daughter to be elected to Chorley Council.

“My dad, Fred had died when my mum became Mayor so she asked me to be her Mayoress and it only seemed right to return the favour.

“We’ve have been lucky to have had two goes at it as it’s such an honour to be Mayor of Chorley. We have even visited some of the same places together this time around.” Florence, who will turn 90 this year, decided to take up politics after retiring early from work and she still sits on Adlington Parish Council.

She laughed: “The only difference this time is that we didn’t forget any appointments! When I was Mayor the attendant once came to pick me up in the mayoral car and I was in the middle of cleaning out the fridge in my work clothes.

“This time round I have checked every night before bed just to be sure.”
