MP's call to halt old clothes racket
Chorley MP Lindsay Hoyle is calling on the government to tackle private companies who are posing as charities and collecting old clothes in order to make profits.
Mr Hoyle has received complaints from constituents after leaflets have been distributed in various parts of the constituency asking residents to donate any old clothes and blankets they have.
The leaflets look very similar to those issued by charities when conducting such collections.
However, the company involved is collecting the garments in order to sell them.
Mr Hoyle is urging the government to take action to ensure that the purpose of such collections is clearly advertised.
He said: "People often donate old clothes to charities as they can make good use of them. For a private company to run an operation and hide the fact that they are selling clothes in order to make a profit is totally wrong.
"It should be clear on the leaflets distributed that the clothes will be sold to make money and then people can make an informed choice about whether to donate old clothes.
"I have written to the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform asking them to investigate this matter and stop any sharp practice that is currently being deployed."
