TV star Steve Pemberton’s mum has revealed appearing on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire was the scariest moment of her life.
Margaret Pemberton, from Chorley, took to the game show hot seat as part of a Mother’s Day special.
Together, mother and son won their way to £10,000 for their chosen charity, Derian House.
Talking to the Chorley Guardian, Mrs Pemberton said: “It’s the most nerve-wracking thing I have ever done in my life - exciting and terrifying at the same time.
“It’s terrible being in that hot seat. You are in front of a live audience, and the worst part of it is that ticking clock.
“If you’re just sat in a room, answering the questions is the simplest thing in the world. But when you’re on the show, you’re always thinking ‘What if I’m wrong?’ and you start questioning whether you’re right or not.
“After the event I enjoyed it thoroughly, and Chris Tarrant was really nice.”
Despite beating fellow contestants, Coronation Street’s Anthony Cotton and mum, Enid, who walked away with £1,000, Mrs Pemberton and Steve, who attended St Michael’s CE High School, still feel they could have gone further.
She said: “We used all of our lifelines earlier than we had hoped. Steve was disappointed we didn’t go further. But it is totally different when you are there, so I think we did very well.”
The duo decided to donate their winnings to Derian House to bring the money back to Lancashire.
Mrs Pemberton said: “We wanted to support a local charity, which would benefit from the money, rather than choosing a large charity that gets lots of support.
“We chose Derian House because they do such a wonderful job.
“I can’t think of anything worse than people whose children have to go through such terrible times.
“So I’m really pleased and proud to have raised the money.”
Steve is currently on the nation’s television screens in hit ITV comedy Benidorm.
