My home looks like a building site

A Chorley dad says his home looks like a building site because of unfinished renovation work.

Alex Brien, of Croft Road, says he has been left in limbo because builders have not replaced the kitchen at the Chorley Community Housing-owned property he lives in.

However, when the Consumer Champion investigated it turned out that part of the delay was caused by the 63-year-old not signing a disclaimer.

Mr Brien, who has heart problems and suffers from arthritis, has been living in the house for 30 years.

The dad-of-four lives at the house with his dog Molly and said: "The work started three months ago and was supposed to be completed within five or six weeks, but they have just left it after coming across another problem with the floor.

"I've not got any kitchen worktops and am making my sandwiches on the washing machine.

"The contractors stripped the kitchen and the bedroom and then took the floorboards up in the small room, which is when they discovered the problem with the joists.

"Nothing has been done since and there are floorboards leaning against the wall in the back room and it's just a big mess. Mr Brien added: "Chorley Community Housing offered to move me to a different house but I like it here and don't want to go anywhere else."

CCH say the work was carried out as part of a 26m improvement scheme to their properties.

A spokesman said: "We are doing everything we can to complete all the work needed at Mr Brien's home and contacted him regularly to explain what we need to do. We have also offered him another house to move into temporarily but he has not taken up the offer.

"His house needs structural work doing on the joists before the kitchen and bathroom replacement can be completed. We explained to Mr Brien it was strongly advisable for him to move out of the house for five days so this structural work could be done. He said he did not want to move out. Our contractors said he could remain providing he agreed a disclaimer. He can either stay in his home and agree a disclaimer while the work is being done, or he can move into another house for a few days."

Mr Brien said he has signed the disclaimer, but says he's still waiting for work to start.
