Packed farewell for doting dad

The girlfriend of tragic teenager Harry Davies thanked him at his funeral for their beautiful son.

Harry, 18, of Farington, Leyland, died on November 22 in Australia just a few weeks after beginning a new life there.

The teenager was killed after the car he was travelling in swerved to avoid a kangaroo and crashed on a dirt track near Perth.

On Friday, more than 150 people paid their respects at his funeral at St Paul's Church in Farington Moss, Leyland.

A tribute read out by the Rev Peter Hallett on behalf of Jodie Southern, Harry's girlfriend of two years, said: "Harry gave me the most precious gift in life and that was a beautiful son."

Harry had emigrated to Australia with Jodie, also 18, and their five-month-old son Alfie at the beginning of November.

At the service, brother Ben, 16, said: "He was a natural father and loved Alfie more than words can possibly describe.

"Going to Australia was supposed to be the start of a new life."

Harry's coffin was carried into the church draped in Manchester United flags along with wreaths saying Daddy and Haz – his nickname.

Several mourners wore the shirts of his favourite team and little Alfie was dressed in a blue baby kit in Harry's memory.

His former headteacher David Pearson, from Hutton Grammar School, described him as 'a big character' with an 'irrepressible sense of fun'.

Harry's coffin was carried out of the church as Circle of Life by Elton John played.

The funeral service was followed by a committal at Charnock Richard Crematorium.

Donations in memory of Harry can be made to Alfie's Trust Fund by contacting BJ Watson Funeral Directors on 01772 626800.
