Restaurant Review - Antonello's, Leyland
After awarding a series of high marks for his restaurant reviews, DAVE SWANTON was disappointed that the good run couldn't continue...
I found the details for Antonello's in Leyland on Google and sadly it wasn't a night to remember.
Situated in Hough Lane on the corner of Herbert Street I froze as I approached the entrance, remembering that in my youth it was the doctor's surgery!
I had memories of being carried in with various broken limbs, dislocated fingers and to get various vaccinations.
The restaurant is upstairs, above the takeaway, and, having booked a table, we made our way up the steep stairs.
At the top, the waitress asked whether we had booked and when we confirmed we had she simply pointed to a table for two and gave us a menu each as we walked past.
I must say I have never received a greeting like that before, but let's move on.
The restaurant has seating for 45 and if it was full it would be a bit cramped.
Whilst we looked over the menu (clean menus I might add) the waitress took our drinks order.
My wife, Carole, wanted half a lager and I went for the faithful large glass of lime and lemonade.
Not until late in the evening did I find out it was bottled lager (Peroni at 2.30) and the large glass of lime and lemonade came in at 3.50 (3 for the lemonade and 50p for the splash of lime).
For starters I selected the Rossini garlic bread with tomato (2.80) and, as I was hungry, I opted for the 12in version. Carole selected the funghi (mushrooms) stilton (4.80).
When the starters arrived the garlic bread was the 9in version. At this stage I couldn't be bothered so we both started eating.
Carole said her funghi stilton was excellent and I thought the Rossini was superb, albeit the wrong size!
Half way through the waitress arrived with the larger 12in version. Never mind, the food was good.
The main courses were selected off the specials board I went for fillet steak with a covering of mozerella (15.90). Mrs W selected 'Filleto
Siciliano' (fillet steak with salad, olives and Feta cheese) for 12.90.
I tucked in but Carole said her steak was on the cold side and called the waitress.
The waitress handled the situation well, she took Carole's meal away and asked if she could take mine too so that we could eat together.
It's not the problem but the way it is handled, and the meals were removed, returned to the kitchen, and returned to us a short time afterwards. We ate the meals and my steak was excellent, although I thought the potatoes and vegetables were a bit hard.
The restaurant is rather hot. It was okay for September but it might be an uncomfortable experience mid summer.
All in all not a night to remember from the moment we walked in and had our seats pointed out to us. Would I go back? Yes I would – just to clear my own mind that on the night of my visit it was an off night.
