Children let their imaginations run wild when they swapped their uniforms for fancy dress costumes to mark World Book Day.

Pupils at schools and nurseries around Chorley and Leyland dressed as their favourite fictional characters.

Among them was the Gruffalo, the Cat In The Hat, Mr Grumpy, the Mad Hatter and a host of heroes.

As well as improving their literacy skills, some youngsters helped to make a difference for others.

Staff and children at Learning Steps Nursery in Chorley donated money to help send books to children in Africa, while pupils at Westmorland School picked up litter during a walk up Rivington Pike.

Photographs have poured in to the Guardian from proud parents and teachers showing off the creative costumes to celebrate the literary day.
