Stamp out 'cowboys'

Residents in Chorley and Leyland are being urged to be extra cautious when dealing with callers at the door.

Despite the promotion of 'No Cold Calling Zones', several complaints have been received about the high prices charged by workmen who have knocked on their door.

Trading Standards has received four complaints in the last two weeks about a paving and driveways company which gives a Manchester address and an 0161 number.

One man in his 80s reported a three-hour sales visit from a company representative, where he managed to hold on and continued to refuse to sign for an alarm which could have cost him over 4,000.

County Coun Marcus Johnstone, Cabinet member for community, planning and partnerships, said: "I would advise residents never to deal with cold callers.

"If you need work doing to your home then go out and look up the numbers of reputable trades people and seek recommendations."

Consumers can report concerns about doorstep callers by ringing Consumer Direct telephone 08454 040506.
