Tales from Down Under
Luis reece
It was now time for the last game of my Australian season and it was a one-day match after last Saturday was washed out without a ball being bowled.
I was determined to leave my mark on the Scorchers and make them want me to play for the team again in the near future.
We lost the toss, like much of the season, and were told by our opponents Wynnum we were to bowl on what seemed a good batting pitch.
The batters came out and put us under pressure straight away, with drop catches and good hitting the Wynnum batters were 60 for 3 after eight overs.
This soon turned into 120 after 13, I was then brought on to bowl, still in the power play overs so I knew they were likely to try and hit me.
However I didn't know to what extent. After getting both batters dropped in the first two balls of my bowling I was hit for a massive 40 runs in three overs, with four dropped catches.
I had never seen anything like it, eight drop catches and a wicket off a no-ball, which ironically was caught at second slip – all in 21 overs of play. It was like playing little kids stuff.
Eventually I got the break through in my fourth over and managed to get some respite from the big hitting as they reached 210 after 20 overs.
As you cricket fans know, the batting team is meant to double their score after 20 overs, so Scorchers were a little concerned. Thanks to some good bowling we were able to bowl them out for 260, which was definitely a pretty gettable score on that pitch.
We got off to a terrific start, getting to 80 for 1 after seven overs.
However things went downhill from here after being rolled out for 240. I managed only four after being caught on the boundary trying to hit out with the last of the tail.
My six months is nearly over and it's scary how fast it has gone. I have a night out with the Scorchers boys to look forward to, followed by a pool party for me and my friends, and then it will be time for the 29-hour flight home.
It's been the best six months of my life and it's an experience I will never forget.
However I am looking forward to be home to start training with my new team-mates at Leyland Cricket Club.
See you all soon.
