Tales from Down Under, December 24

Chorley-based cricket star Luis Reece is currently playing for Sunshine Coast Scorchers in Australia and is sending back weekly reports of his adventures...

This last week saw me do some travelling with the parents, going to Ayers Rock, Sydney and Melbourne.

Starting off in Ayers Rock for a night, and wow, was it worth it. We went to watch the sun set on the legendary rock Uluru.

We watched the different colours as the sun set on what was a beautiful 30 degrees day.

We then got to see some Aboriginal tools, including a boomerang and a spear.

When I went back to the hotel it was time for a tremendous back massage to help get rid of the aches and pains from the weekend and boy, did I need it.

The following day saw us fly to Sydney for a couple of nights as we stayed in the city.

Meeting up with a few family friends, we went to Darling Harbour and China Town.

The following day we went up the Sydney Tower, where you could see the Sydney Cricket Ground, to the harbour to see the Opera House and the bridge. It was truly magnificent.

Later that night I went to the famous Bondi Beach where I was to meet one of my ex-workmates as he took me to this steak house.

The dishes were huge (I'll try and upload some pictures on Facebook).

It was then off to Melbourne and I won't be going back there for a while after it was too cold for my liking.

We were stationed in St Kilda, opposite the club that Chorley and Lancashire cricketer Tom Smith is playing for.

The main sightseeing place was the Melbourne Cricket Ground. We had a tour and it was amazing to see a ground that hopefully some day I'll get the chance to play on.

It was then time for our departure back to Brisbane and start preparing for the second half of our rival game.

An early bed was in order to try and refresh after late nights and early starts throughout the week.

We decided to keep batting on what was a really good pitch. There was no sideways movement or swing. It was a true day for batting.

We managed to take our overnight score of 340 for 8 to 376 all out.

Our opponents seemed to be doing well as they reached lunch undisturbed for 40.

I was introduced three overs before lunch and I managed to get the first breakthrough. I bowled 13 overs straight through until the captain said: "Pom only one more, don't want to wear you out".

As a result I decided to put in an extra five per cent of effort and managed to get another wicket with a bouncer that was gloved to the keeper.

I was given another but nothing happened, bowling a spell of 15 overs 2-29.

The game looked like it was heading for a draw so I got brought back on to bowl bouncers, only managing two more overs until I couldn't carry on.

Dehydration caused me to have a big headache and saw me being carried off the field. Not resting enough and then bowling a long spell caused me to break down.

After an hour's sleep and drinking lots of water and trying to cool down, the game came to a close as they finished 200 for 6.
