Tales from Down Under, November 5

Chorley-based cricket star Luis Reece is currently playing for Sunshine Coast Scorchers in Australia and is sending back weekly reports of his adventures...

It has been a month-and-a-half since I arrived Down Under and I have experienced some pretty amazing things, on and off the playing field.

However, washing and ironing is certainly not one of them, which is one thing my mum has always been good at – not to mention the cooking.

I currently work nights in the Coles supermarket, located in the Sunshine Plaze shopping centre.

I'm also working with Jeff Thomas, coaching the local talent, moving around the coast to different schools.

Sunshine Coast is a far cry from Chorley and it's known to be one of the best spots in Queensland and Australia.

Found on the coast just outside the main city of Brisbane, there is an ever-increasing population that come to the sunny coast to start over and live the dream lifestyle. Having spent a few weeks here I can see why.

The sunny coast lifestyle has a great mixture that makes living there such an attraction. such as Mountain climbs with great views, sunny, golden beaches with great seas to surf and sail.

Forgetting the great things to see and do, such as the zoo named in memory of the Australia 'Crocodile Hunter' Steve Irwin, who was killed by a stingray in 2006, the locals are incredibly friendly.

The people are tremendous and nearly always say 'good day' – or 'g'day' for short.

However, if living this life day in day out is too hard and you want a louder city then Brisbane is only an hour away.

It's not all peace and quiet when the night life comes. People come out in numbers and enjoy the wide range of bars varying from English and Irish bars to the local Australian pubs and bars, where APL (Aussie Poker League) is played.

Since I have been here everyone has worked so hard to make it the best possible stay, offering to give me lifts to places and take me out so I feel involved.

The highlight of my stay off the field is definitely seeing the Brisbane Bronchos rugby league team at their impressive Suncorp Stadium.

Like many people who have come over from England and other parts of the world who have found it easy to set up a life out here, I can honestly say that if things don't work out at home for me with cricket and other things that I could be one of those people.
