Heartless thieves are targeting a Chorley charity shop.

The culprits have been branded ‘despicable’ by the shop’s manager, Tracy Bennett, who runs the Salvation Army store on Pall Mall.

She says she is facing a daily battle against thieves.

She said: “Everybody who I have told about the incidents is disgusted.

“It really does take the lowest of the low to do this, but it really is a sign of the times.

“It’s a daily occurrence, people steal from inside the shop as well as stealing charity bags that are left on the doorstep.

“We even have to bring our bins in as people started to root through those.”

Mrs Bennett says the charity only wants to help people and the thieves are stealing from the community.

She added: “It is hard to keep an eye on everything as we have such a high turnover of stock.

“We don’t want to take advantage of people, we keep our prices as low as possible, our shop is a community, if people steal they are stealing from the community.”

A Salvation Army spokesman said: “As a church and charity, we have a very supportive relationship with local police, they respond swiftly to our needs and we feel that the new system will provide an additional level of comfort that any missing donations can be alerted to the police without delay.

“We would also like to thank the public for their continued generosity as we simply could not help the number of people we do without their vital charity shop donations.”

Chorley Police has said they have contacted the Salvation Army about the incidents.

Officers have offered a number of crime prevention schemes as well as support and advice.
