Four cars were damaged when heavy rain flooded a Chorley street.

Water got inside the vehicles parked on Water Street on Tuesday.

“I woke up to see little swimming pools in my car. Nothing works in it and the insurers say it’s going to be totalled because of the flood damage.”

Alan Akaster’s £14,000 Vauxhall Insignia was written off because of the damage.

He said: “I woke up to see little swimming pools in my car. Nothing works in it and the insurers say it’s going to be totalled because of the flood damage.”

A four-year-old Nissan Micra owned by James Dawson, 92, was also damaged.

The street has previously flooded, leading to his car being written off in 2010 and moving out of his home for three months several years ago.

His son Kenneth said: “There’s quite a bit of debris on the road, lots of plastic bottles and an overriding smell of sewage.”

A United Utilities spokesman said: “The torrential rain on Tuesday caused a number of problems with surface flooding around Chorley.

“On Water Street, the sewer network filled up and overflowed. There is a huge underground tank, the size of four Olympic swimming pools, which can store additional sewer flows to help prevent flooding. This filled up as it’s designed to do, but the sheer volume of rain still caused the system to overflow.”

A flood alert for South Ribble and Chorley was in place as householders woke up this morning after a night of heavy rain.

Fire crews were called to The Common in Adlington at 4.15am to pump out water from three houses, and cellars flooded at houses on Weldbank Lane, Chorley.

In an unrelated incident, United Utilities engineers were busy after a burst pipe in Adlington left homes without water or with poor water pressure for a second day - just hours after an initial burst was fixed.

Adlington St Paul’s Primary School was closed for a second day because of the problem.

Repairs were reported to have been completed by 2.30pm and water supplies restored.
