Wan's Cantonese, Wheelton
Dave Swanton took up the chopsticks at Wan's Cantonese and rated it 10 out of 10.
Wan's Cantonese in Wheelton is one of those restaurants I have been meaning to visit for years, but for one reason or another I never got round to it.
However the opportunity arose when Editor Maguire suggested I take Carole and go and sample the food.
I booked a table for me and Mrs S, and when we arrived I was taken by surprise at what a lovely setting the restaurant is in and how well it had been designed and decorated.
We were shown to our table our drinks order was taken promptly and we were handed the menus which immediately ticked the first 'Swanny Box' as they were clean and well set out.
I opted for the ever reliable large glass of lime and lemonade (they are not in pints anymore, something to do with EU regulations) and Carole selected a glass of rose wine in probably the biggest glass I have ever seen.
There is something for everyone, in fact there are 212 different items including if you fancy it……… 'Wan's Bird's Nest Special'.
Carole and I opted for the set dinner for two which included aromatic crispy duck (40-50 for both of us).
There is a choice of soup for starters.
Carole opted for crab and sweetcorn soup whilst my choice was chicken and sweetcorn. Served piping hot with prawn crackers, what a great start to the evening.
Next up was the a selection of barbecued spare ribs, crispy spring rolls, crispy wan tan and seaweed.
When this was placed on the table and the aromatic duck shortly afterwards I was delighted with my decision to wear my expanding waist trousers.
Everything served was excellent in presentation and more importantly taste.
After the table was cleared (by us and the waiter) we took a time out before the main course arrived.
Sweet and sour chicken, fried beef with green peppers and black bean sauce, fried mixed vegetables with cashew nuts and fried rice.
Outstanding was the verdict of Mr and Mrs Swanton.
The atmosphere in the restaurant was friendly and very relaxing and little extras like finger bowls are provided.
We were then at that stage where you wonder if the inclusion of the aromatic crispy duck was actually a good idea but hey we are on a night out and enjoying ourselves.
The table was cleared very efficiently and the fresh fruit and coffee was then served to end a perfect meal.
I then sat there reflecting on the night and how good the whole experience had been from booking a table to eating.
Well done Wan's.
I may have been meaning to visit for years but will definitely be back on a regular basis, and if I haven't time to sit and dine there, they operate a takeaway menu too.
