Wilson's at The Robin Hood Inn, Mawdesley

Looking for something different, we ventured out (with the aid of the sat nav) and drove to Mawdesley.

I hadn't been there for years and going through Eccleston, I drove over several roundabouts that certainly weren't there last time I went.

The car park at the Robin Hood was very busy.

Once inside, you have two eating options, one being in the pub with a Robin Hood theme (the Friar Tuck mixed grill looked like a challenge for another day).

However, we climbed the stairs at the rear of the pub and were greeted by a lovely young lady who welcomed us to Wilson's and showed us to our table.

You'll be relieved to know menus were clean, the place was spotless and there was some background music playing at a comfortable level.

Carole ordered a large glass of red wine and I ordered a lime and lemonade from the very pleasant waitress.

The drinks arrived promptly and Carole said she had never seen a glass as big. It was like an aquarium on a stem! The contents were excellent too and Carole enjoyed a refill later.

For starters, I ordered tomato bruscetta with rocket and balsamic dressing (4.95), whilst Carole opted for king prawn and smoked salmon with a sweet chilli sauce (5.95).

The bruscetta was outstanding. Tomatoes on such dishes are sometimes served as a paste, but Wilson's bruscetta had lots of fresh tomatoes.

Carole said her starter was lovely and she would be serving the same to me at home soon. For the main course, I selected sirloin steak with scorched tomatoes and cracked green peppercorn sauce (15.50), whilst Carole selected chicken with brandy and peppercorn sauce stuffed with stilton (12.95).

Again served promptly with a smile, the meals were accompanied by fresh vegetables (brocolli, carrots, peas and cauliflower) and lyonnaise potatoes - potatoes and onion sauteed in butter.

I could have done with more potatoes, but that apart we both agreed that the food was outstanding.

The dessert menu is extensive too and I decided to sample the banoffee pie, whilst Carole had the ice cream.

I am not a wine drinker, but the wine list is both extensive and there are well-written notes on what to expect from your selection.

Rounding the meal off with fresh coffee, we both agreed that Wilson's is an excellent venue with an excellent menu. Yes, I will definitely return to Wilson's and I must have a go at that Friar Tuck mixed grill!
