Guardian readers have their say on the latest issues affecting Chorley and Leyland.
We'll all have to walk
Dear editor, I write with regards to the comments of Brian King (Guardian, April 29).
He has warned us residents of Beechfield Road, Leyland, that when yellow lines are enforced, we will not be able to have friends /family/ builders etc park without them getting a parking ticket.
I would like to put his mind at rest as they already can't come and visit as it is impossible for them to park at present as the Runshaw College students already own the road!
At least the yellow lines will not be leaving litter and driving up and down like it is a race track, with no respect to anyone and a very high risk of injury to our children.
If he is really having problems visiting his father-in-law nearby for fear of getting a ticket, can I suggest that he walk? Problem solved.

Ask MPs on expenses
Dear editor, can I request that the Guardian ask the MPs for Chorley and Leyland to make public their annual expenses since taking their seats and to detail how those figures are arrived at?
The anger amongst the general public about the obscene expenses claimed by MPs for items such as bath plugs, horse manure, cleaning moats etc is real and we all want to be assured that our MPs are abiding by what is rightly justified, not that it's okay because it is within the rules.
Further, I would also call for our councillors to detail how their expenses are arrived at.
I shall await with interest to see if they actually do declare in full detail, before they are published by the press.

Shocked to see crossing
Dear editor, after being away for a couple of weeks I was shocked to find that as I turned from Park Road into St Thomas's Road, Chorley, I was suddenly upon a zebra crossing, just as two pedestrians stepped onto it.
By removing the traffic lights and substituting an uncontrolled crossing on a blind corner in this way, I feel that the highways department of Lancashire County Council must have a death wish on Chorley Council employees and residents.
I have a high regard for Coun Ralph Snape (who pushed for the campaign), but I must admit that when I read earlier of this proposed crossing, at a cost of 28,000, I did take a sharp intake of breath.
I am sure that the final result cannot be quite what was envisaged by him and I hope that he uses his considerable influence to get a crossing which is controlled by lights, (at no additional cost), before the population of Chorley is drastically reduced.

Simple: Stick to the Code
Dear editor, oh dear, more complaints about roadside speed surveillance cameras on roads around our area.
So many road users seem to be unaware of speed restrictions imposed on our highways or they decide not to comply.
High visibility 'Gatso' cameras only slow down drivers on the approach, only to accelerate afterwards.
I appreciate so-called covert operations may not be popular, but please drivers – obey the Highway Code.

Agitated over mast
Dear editor, regarding the planned phone mast outside the Broadfield Arms in Leyland (Guardian, May 6) ... I don't know what the people in Leyland Lane are getting so agitated about.
The 'monstrous carbuncle' will only look like a street lighting column without the lamp on top.
There are plenty of lamp posts and telegraph poles in the area already that are more visually intrusive than a slimline phone mast, yet most people will never even notice them. The pub signpost (the sign itself is missing) is a massive structure compared to a phone mast.
It's funny isn't it – everybody wants to use mobile phones, but nobody wants the masts.

Uplifting
Dear editor, I would like to say thank you very much for all help and kindness I received from the couple who came to my rescue on Monday, May 11, around 7pm on the market after falling from my bike. It was also lovely speaking to you about (cricketer) Freddie Truman.
