65, but Fred weighs in
A Brindle weightlifting champion has turned 65 – but he's got no intention of swapping his dumb-bells for a bus pass just yet.
Fred Smith, pictured, is busy preparing to take part in the European Powerlifting competition later this year in the Czech Republic.
He's hoping to go one better than 2007 when he won the silver medal in the same event.
Fred of Sandy Lane, Brindle, will be competing in the masters category against opponents of a similar age.
In April the pensioner completed the London Marathon – his fifth marathon race.
He said: "There's no secret to it. My motivation is I've always trained.
"My focus now is the Europeans. My best ever finish was a silver so I would like to go one better and get a gold."
