It was a family affair when two rugby-playing brothers took to the pitch recently - in opposing teams.
Chorley second team skipper Phil Callander came face-to-face with his older brother John, who was playing for Warrington, in a friendly clash.

The brothers played together in their father Tony's last ever game in 1984 for Chorley Stags team against Lymm but the rivalry on the pitch this time was intense.

Proud dad Tony Callander and former president of Chorley RUFC said: "It is great for me to see the two of them both on the pitch again and especially at Chorley as they both came up through the youth system together.

"I also think it is a great privilege to play alongside my sons in a game and they have both progressed in the sport to be captains which makes me proud.

"But you can see the rivalry between the two of them as John is determined to prove that even though he is older than Phil he can still play a hard game and it is the other way round for Phil."

With both players playing in the forwards there were some big hits when the two players eventually took to the field in the second and third quarters of the match.

Phil, 36, said: "It was a good competitive game to start the season off and we played in their faces and even though Warrington won we managed to give 30 players a game.

"It was good playing against my brother and especially as I managed to steal the ball from him once which he was not happy about.

"But then he tackled me just as I was about to score a try so I suppose we evened each other out."
