A Chorley footballer has spoken about having to go through the most nerve-wracking hour of his life before being told if he would be getting a professional contract.
Last Friday 19-year-old Nathan Fairhurst faced his moment of truth when the members of the Preston North End youth team squad were told whether they would be awarded a 12 month contract at the club.

He said: "It was difficult as I was the 10th player to go into the coach's office and I was the second to last.

"I saw the guys ahead of me coming out with disappointment on their faces and it was a terrible feeling waiting to go in. But I was surprised when I was told I would be getting a professional contract."

Nathan, of Eaves Green Road, was one of only two players from the 11-strong youth team that has been retained and he believes that will motivate him.

"I have worked hard and all I want to do is play football," he told the Guardian. "It has always been my dream to get a contract with Preston ever since I joined at nine."
