Spartans aim to raise £3,000
A rugby match played in memory of legend player Mike Gregory has taken place in Chorley.
As part of the Chorley Panthers Summer Tournament, local charity-based rugby league side the Chorley Spartans took to the field against Warrington's seasoned amateurs Latchford Albion in the annual Mike Gregory Memorial Challenge.
Gregory died in 2007 after a long battle with motor neurone disease.
Both sides were presented to guests of honour Erica Gregory and her sons Sam and Ben before taking to the field, with young Sam going to centre field to kick the game off.
After 15 minutes Latchford's experience took the upper hand and the first try was registered.
Several more scores followed before the Spartans' prop Jamie Jackson bulldozed over the line for a try. Jackson crossed the line again but by this time the game was over as a contest with Latchford coming out 42-12 winners.
Both teams went up to collect their medals presented by Wigan legend Joe Lydon and Erica Gregory with Albion receiving the Mike Gregory Challenge cup in its first year as an established competition.
Man-of-the-match awards went to Latchford's number eight Matty Patterson and Spartans prop Jamie Jackson.
The Spartans are confident the match will raise around £3,000 for the Mike Gregory Trust Fund and they want to thank Mike Gregory's family for their support.
