Coppull United 2 Vickerstown 0
COPPULL United continued their impressive run of form with a convincing win over sixth-placed Vickerstown.
Dave Haughton’s side have now won six on the bounce, and he believes the Blainscough Park side have what it takes to challenge for the league title this season.
In front of a crowd of 200, Coppull started brightly on 20 minutes and leading scorer Greg Brickell ran at the opposition defence and then slotted home into the bottom left corner. It was nip and tuck for the remainder of the half, and there was a lack of clear-cut chances to stay 1-0.
At half-time, Haughton spurred his side on and goalkeeper Alex Walsh had to be on top form in a one-on-one situation to keep Vickerstown out.
There were some nerve-wracking moments for Coppull, but the win was wrapped up with 10 minutes left as Jack Thornton linked up well with Brickell. Brickell fired into the bottom right-hand corner of the net and there was breathing space between Coppull and their opponents.
Manager Haughton said: “Vickerstown are a strong side and we were made to battle hard for the win. Jack Thornton had a great game and, even though he is only 18, he doesn’t fear failure.
“The lads have put themselves in a great position and I said I want to be up there looking for the league. We have the right group of lads to do that and they are physically fit and ready for the challenge.”
