Footballers from a Chorley secondary school are Chorley and District champions.

The team of Year 10 boys from St Michael’s High School defeated Holy Cross 4-1 in the final at Charnock Richard.

After a close first half, which saw the teams turn round locked at 1-1, St Michael’s greater strength showed as they scored three unanswered second-half goals.

Michael Kennedy, who coaches the team jointly with colleague Dave Laverty, said: “It was a great final, played at a great venue and the pupils really enjoyed playing there.

“There’s been a lot of good football played this year, and Dave and myself have spent a lot of time coaching them.”

The win caps off a strong year for St Michael’s, which also saw them reach the quarter-finals of the Lancashire Cup, but lose to the eventual winners.

Michael says the goal for next year is to try and win the competition.

He said: “The skill and the ability is definitely there, we just need a bit of luck and more concentration in the big matches.”

Headteacher Chris Bagguley said: “We are very successful in school sport, but it is all about participation as well.

“Whatever pupils are doing we challenge them to do the very best they can.”
