Chorley 1 PNE 3

Garry Flitcroft's Chorley side lost 3-1 to Preston North End on Friday in the Jack Kirkland Trophy but emerged with real credit.

A big crowd turned up at Victory Park for the traditional pre-season fixture and they weren't disappointed.

Leyland lad Danny Mayor was the PNE hero with a brace of goals.

Darren Ferguson's side, who thrashed Bamber Bridge 6-1 on Tuesday night, took a sixth-minute lead when Mayor tapped in from close range.

It looked gloomy for the Magpies when defender Andy Russell sliced his clearance into his own net after 15 minutes.

Chorley hauled themselves back into the game in the second period when midfielder Dale Whitham drove home into the bottom corner to the delight of the home crowd.

But Mayor snuffed out any chances of a recovery with his home his second from 25 yards with 10 minutes to go to make it 3-1 to the Lilywhites.
