Chorley ABC celebrating success

A boxing club from Chorley is punching above its weight when it comes to its reputation in the sport.

Chorley Amateur Boxing Club on Lyons Lane has high hopes that some of its young fighters can follow in footsteps of the likes of Michael Jennings and Carl Crooks.

Thomas Daniels, 13, Connor McHugh, 12, Robert Bradshaw, 14 and Ashley King, 14, are all being tipped for big things.

Meanwhile, 16-year-old Jack Catterall is preparing to fight at the CYP Young Championships.

Reece Bretherton, manager of the club, said: "Chorley ABC has a great reputation for producing top boxers with 30 national champions, while

95 per cent of them represented England.

"I hope it will continue with this group of lads but it's difficult for them as when it comes to big championships they could be drawn against

more experienced boxers.

"Normally you can try to line boxers up depending on their number of fights."

Bretherton has been involved with the club for 49 years and is working alongside Michael Graves and Zbigniew Magzarak to nurture the talent.

He said young Catterall could compete in the World Youth Championships later this year.

"He has been at the club for the past six year since he was 10 and has got potential. Even though they may come up against tougher opponents one thing about the Chorley lads is that they never give up.
