Chorley's Howson quits Brig
Former Chorley player Stuart Howson has quit his latest club Bamber Bridge.
The move comes just a few months after officials at the QED Stadium held a fundraiser for the stricken defender following an horrific injury.
The 27-year-old, who was born in Chorley and still lives in Buckshaw Village, was one of Gerry Luczka's first signings during his time in charge of the Victory Park club.
However, he left soon afterwards and was playing at Bamber Bridge last season when he broke his leg during a match against Wakefield.
The former Chesterfield player described it as 'the worst moment of my footballing career' and his team-mates and Brig officials rallied round to help his cause.
Previous manager Phil Entwistle and the entire club went out of their way for the PE teacher and held a 'testimonial' match that raised 1,500 for him.
Now he's decided to join captain Alex Porter at AFC Fylde.
Howson, who posted a message of the Bamber Bridge Fans Forum to explain his decision, told the Guardian: "I wasn't sure that Tony Greenwood wanted to keep me. The club was great to me and I've spoken to Terry (Gammans) and Phil (Entwistle) about my reasons (for going) and I'll never forget what they did for me.
"The fact is I broke my leg playing for the club. A new manager has come in and he couldn't make any promises. I need the extra security.
"I've told Terry what I'll be getting at AFC Flyde and it's less than I was on at Brig last season. It's not about the money."
Manager Tony Greenwood: "It's Stuart's decision. We offered him a pre-season with us, taking into account he broke his leg six months ago.
"I think what Stuart needed was a bit of security in terms of a contract.
"As a financial thing we couldn't offer that until we saw he was 100 per cent, not in fitness, but with the injury.
"We told Stuart we'd like him to stay, come along pre-season and prove his fitness.
"People here are a little gutted. After what this club did for Stuart with the testimonial game, we are a little bit disappointed at the way it's been done.
"He's told one or two people it is not about the money, but you don't go to Fylde for the facilities."
