Rampant Chorley got their hands on the coveted Lancashire FA Challenge Trophy for an unprecedented 16th time as they demolished Clitheroe FC.
The Magpies quality on and off the ball showed throughout long periods of the tie as Clitheroe struggled to cope with Chorley’s pace and power.
The Blues put in a much improved performance in the second half and on another day they could have scored a goal of their own but ultimately it was Chorley’s excellent first-half display that allowed them to run out comfortable winners.
Chorley will immediately switch their focus to Saturday, when they return to league action as they travel to Edgeley Park to take on Stockport County.
It took only the four minutes for Chorley to take the lead, skipper Andrew Teague, who was back from a three match ban headed home.
James Dean doubled the Magpies’ lead from the penalty spot in the 15th minute and with seven minutes remaining of the half, Chris Almond bagged a deserved goal.
Boss Garry Flitcroft opted to make seven changes to the side that started against AFC Fylde on Saturday.
In came goalkeeper Aaron Grundy, skipper Teague, Jake Cottrell, Josh Hine, Jack Lynch, Almond and Paul Jarvis with Sam Ashton, Chris Doyle, Dale Whitham, Adam Roscoe, Chris Simm, Harry Winter and Jack Dorney dropping to the bench and out of the squad respectively.
The Magpies made a quick start at the Macron stadium taking the lead in the fourth minute.
Adam Mather’s initial corner floated over everybody, James Dean picked up the loose ball on the left, he whipped in a cross and out jumping his marker was Teague, who nodded past former Chorley goalkeeper Zac Hibbert.
The early goal rocked Simon Garner’s side and Hibbert was called upon minutes later diving low to save Hine’s tame effort.
Chorley-born striker Louis Mayers flashed a cross across the face of goal for Clitheroe before blazing a free-kick over the bar after being hacked down by Teague on the edge-of-the-box.
Just as the Evo-Stik Division One North side looked to be getting back into the game, Chorley doubled their lead.
Jarvis timed a through ball to perfection releasing Dean on goal, he made his way into the area rounding Zach Hibbert and as he looked to pull the trigger he was tripped by the Clitheroe shotstopper.
Dean took the honours of taking the spot kick and sent Hibbert the wrong way finding the bottom left corner.
The physicality between the two sides was telling with Hine, Dean and Almond all causing problems with their power and pace.
Jarvis then blazed an effort over the bar while Teague saw a header rebound off the woodwork.
With 10 minutes remaining of the half, a defensive mix-up saw David Lynch played through on goal but he and Cory Bent saw shots heroically blocked by a sliding Teague.
Chorley looked a threat each time they attacked and three minutes later the tie was put to bed, Almond was played through on goal and showed quality finding the back-of-the-net lobbing the onrushing Hibbert.
On the stroke of half-time, the Blues almost reduced the deficit but Sefton Gonzales’ low shot thundered back off the post with Grundy well beaten.
The first action of the second half saw Clitheroe substitute Zac Dale get in behind fullback Mark Ross but the former could only scoop a shot into the arms of Grundy.
Simon Garner’s side continued to have the better of the play in the second half and Gonzales should have done better when one-on-one with Grundy but he could only shoot straight at the Chorley goalkeeper.
Player-manager Garner drilled a free-kick well wide of goal while the lively Mayers shot over from inside the area.
Substitute Whitham had an effort cleared off the line while at the other end Grundy was on hand to beat away Lynch’s edge-of-the-box shot.
Late on, Grundy saved comfortably denying Richard Burns from a distance while Hine shot wide after excellent hold up play from Winter.
