Free fishing 'catches' on

Children were hooked after the first of Withnell Angling Club's free fishing matches in Brinscall.

Twelve youngsters turned up to the three-hour fishing event where they were taken by qualified coaches and taught how to catch fish at Shale Holes.

Spokesman Dave Cox said: "The event was a great success as every child managed to catch something. We even had some of the kids asking their parents if they could come back and fish themselves."

Dave said: "We are appealing to school teachers in the Chorley borough to get in contact with us and to tell the children about what we are doing as it is free to attend.

"We have a junior section in the club and in the past it was only for people from Withnell but we want to broaden the appeal.

"We want to try to get more children involved and give them a taste of fishing and how enjoyable it is. If they enjoy it they can join the club and take part in our competitve tournaments which start on June 21."

William Lavelle-Bowden, 12, caught the fish of the day - a 1lb roach.
