Despite a spirited Gregson Phoenix effort, Springfield retained Sunday League Trophy they have held for the last two years after a 5-1 win at Victory Park.

In a game played in wet conditions and the ball moving quickly on the wet surface, Springfield adapted better and went in 2-0 up at half-time.

After the restart, Gregson were always on the back foot with man of the match for Springfield Scott hendy causing the Gregson defence all sorts of problems.

A brief comeback which saw Gregson get a consolation goal, from Alex Smith, and despite a man-of-the-match performance from Gregson’s Jack Walmsley, they were unable to trouble Springfield much.

Goals from Phil Dennett, George Melling, Rob Laithwaite, Hendy and Guy Taylor saw them collect their first silverware of the season.

There were even more reasons for them to celebrate on Sunday as results in the league also saw them emerge as league champions.

Next Sunday they go for the treble, when they play Ley Inn in the final of the Chorley Nissan Sunday Shield at Chorley FC (kick off 1pm).
