GOALS by John Sanderson and Carl Grimshaw were enough to help under-strength Charnock Richard to book their place in the semi-finals of the cup competition.

Andy Westwell’s side were representing the Lancashire FA and travelled to Huddersfield to face the West Riding League opponents.

Charnock were struggling with a few injuries and there were changes to the starting line-up with Mike Fletcher and Ollie Telford dropped to the bench alongside David Burrows, Chris Robinson and Tom Morgan.

David Prout, unavailable the previous Saturday, started on the left and Alex Porter, who has returned to the club after starting the season with Bamber Bridge, was up front.

Charnock took the initiative from the kick-off and there were strong claims for a penalty after only five minutes.

Grimshaw was impeded in the box as he went for the ball but he managed to hit the ball straight at the keeper but the referee judged that advantage had been played.

A Porter free-kick from out on the right, after Dashti had been fouled on 13 minutes, saw Ross Bain head home but the goal was ruled out for offside.

Porter had three chances in front of goal before half-time but it remained scoreless at the break.

The hosts picked up the pace in the second half and went ahead when Brighton Mugadze beat Paul Eatock.

Charnock did not have to wait long for an equaliser as Damian Dashti set up Porter who crossed for Grimshaw to head past the keeper.

It increasingly looked as if the game was going to go into extra time but the home keeper fouled Grimshaw in the box.

Up stepped John Sanderson to help Charnock book their pace in the next round.
