Jodie's up for the high jump!

A Chorley schoolgirl is leaping for joy after she became a Lancashire U17 champion– at the age of 14.

Southlands High School pupil Jodie Farnworth was one of the star attractions at the Lancashire County Athletics finals at Stanley Park in Blackpool.

Jodie only took up the high jump two years ago and has continued to rise up the rankings which culminated in her jump of 1.55m.

Mum Gwen Farnworth said: "We are very proud of her achievements over the past few months.

"Her success is down to her coach at Chorley Athletics Club Stuart Swann.

"He has been great, taking her to training and also doing stuff to make her develop by spending time with her.

"Last year, Jodie was Lancashire Schools Champion when she jumped 1.48m and her performance recently shows how she has improved.

"We are very happy with her progress and hopefully she can have more success in future."

The 14-year-old is a talented sports star as she also plays as a right midfielder for Euxton Girls U15 team.

Gwen said: "Jodie really enjoys the high jump and also playing football.

"She decided to take up the sport after doing it at school and then

wanted to get further coaching outside of school."

Jodie said: "I did not know I had won the competition as there was a girl in the U20s category who cleared 1.60m. But, I was shocked to hear I was U17 champion but my next goal is the Lancashire Schools event in June.

"It will be a tough competition as some of the best athletes from across Lancashire will be there."
