Magpies' make or break period

Chorley boss Steve Waywell reckons February could be a make or break month for the Magpies' play-off hopes.

The Magpies face four successive away games next month with Bamber Bridge, Leigh, Rossendale and Fylde , before leaders Lancaster visit

Victory Park on February 20.

"Hopes of reaching the top six hinge on what happens in February," said Waywell.

"We've a really difficult run, and we've not been great away, but if we pick up seven or eight points from those fixtures we'll be in the mix.

"It is our toughest run of the season, but that's the target for the team. I believe we can force our way into the promotion picture and we are continuing to improve."

Chorley were hit harder than most by the freeze-up, and last Saturday's 3-1 win over Garforth was their first outing for six weeks.

"We were a bit rusty, which was expected, but that gave us our third victory on the bounce, our best run of the campaign," added Waywell.

"We've scored eight and conceded three in that time, a decent effort by the boys."

Waywell expects a stern test at Skelmersdale United tomorrow, with new signings David Thompson and Craig Worrall both set to feature.

Thompson started against Garforth while Worrall came off the bench as Chorley edged into the top half of the table.

"It was a massive coup for Chorley bringing David Thompson here.

"Many clubs – several in the Conference – wanted to take him when he

was released by Bury," said the manager.

"It was his first game since October, so it is going to take time for him to get going, but he is very strong and can play in midfield and defence, so will bring extra strength in depth."

Waywell had been on Worrall's trail since the tall striker scored against the Magpies for Colne in the Lancashire Cup this season.

"Worrall's six feet six and very quick for such a big lad.

"I don't think he will start every game, but his presence will give us another option in attack, and we need that."

Aiden Kirkbride, signed two months ago, could play tomorrow, missing out last weekend due to a previously arranged exam.
