CHORLEY Golf Club member Gareth Hastie captured his third Bolton Championship title in seven years with a hard-fought victory against host club player Andy Runciman at Deane.
With home advantage, 2001 champion Runciman held the upper hand for most of the front nine.
Adlington man Hastie edged ahead at the dog-leg par five 10th and looked certain to increase his lead at the next after his opponent hooked his ball into the trees.
But a fine recovery shot and long putt from off the green earned him an unlikely birdie and the match was all square again.
In torrential rain Hastie lost his ball on the 13th to go one down.
The 14th green had to be cleared of water with both players making pars.
Then in almost unplayable conditions, Hastie won the next three holes in par to settle the issue.
Meanwhile, former Chorley member and 2010 Bolton champion Liam Ball closed with a 73 in the De Vere PGA North Region Championship at Herons’ Reach on two-under par.
It was a commendable effort by the 22-year-old on his PGA debut as he shared 17th place with six other players including GB & I PGA Cup men Simon Edwards and Andy Barnett.
