A Chorley rugby league ace is waiting to find out if he’s in the Wigan Warriors squad for Saturday’s Challenge Cup final against Leeds.

Former Chorley Panthers star Josh Charnley is hoping coach Michael Maguire will pick him in his 17-man squad for the biggest day in the rugby league calendar at Wembley.

Speaking exclusively to the Guardian, the 20-year-old said: “It’s just a case of training as hard as I can and putting my hand up for selection.

“I know that I have turned a few heads this season with some people saying that I am the next Jason Robinson because I have scored a lot of tries.

“However, I want to keep my feet on the ground because I never thought that I would play as many games as I have done.

“I don’t think I have done much wrong this season but I will have to wait and see.

“We have a great team spirit anyway and I will still be going down with the lads.

“I am still only 20 and have another 10 or 11 years left to play in a Challenge Cup final.”

Charnley has made 22 appearances for the Warriors this season and scored 15 times - including one against St Helens in the 18-12 semi-final win.

He said: “I have worked a lot on my footwork and then my pace has helped me run in some long range ones so far.

“The lads have been brilliant setting a lot of them up for me and Pat Richards to score them.

“Of course I would love to score a try in the final but just to pull on the shirt and get an early carry would be great.

“I am going to be really nervous about it but I get that even when I am playing at the DW Stadium nevermind in front of a sell-out crowd.”

Charnley, who could notch up more than 100 points for the club at the weekend in his career, expects Leeds to push them to the limit.

He said: “They are a bit of bogey side for us.We have to turn up and do our thing and see how it goes.”
