After the recent success in the ring, Jennings Gym has announced their biggest coup yet after getting professional boxer Matty Askin to join the squad.

Askin from Blackpool, was previously with well-known trainer Bob Shannon but has decided to make the switch to the Coppull-based Gym.

With a record of 13 wins and just the one loss in his 14 fights, Askin will be looking to improve his record further under the guidance of the Jennings brothers.

Askin is the current English cruiserweight title holder and has been tipped by many to be soon fighting for British title honours.

Delighted Mick Jennings, who has known Matty for two years, is pleased that a professional has joined the gym.

He said: “It’s great that Matty has been able to come down and train at our gym.

“I’ve known him for a while now as his first gym was at the same one I was at in Moston.

“A few weeks back, I saw him at the Reebok Stadium and he said he had been meaning to come and have a look.

“The next thing, he is training with us so it is something as simple as that.”

Jennings has high hopes for Matty, but insists that he won’t rush him back into the ring.

He added: “Matty hasn’t fought in the ring for four months now.

“So we will look to get him a six or eight rounder in December to help build his confidence up.”

There has been yet more success for the gym as 23-year-old Micky Ellison is through to the Novice North West Counties Under-10 Championship final.

Ellison has won all four of his fights and trainer Jennings said: “Micky will be too strong for his opponent.

“I really think he can win this title.”
