Chorley opened their account for the season with a win over favourites for the league title Newton-le-Willows.
It was 3-3 at the break after a penalty by full-back Dave Dawson but the hosts felt they could have been ahead after they missed three shots at goal.
Midway through the second period, after a spell of sustained pressure by the forwards, scrum-half Rob Melling jinked his way past a couple of defenders to score what proved to be the only try of the game.
With 10 minutes left on the clock, the visitors almost brought the scores level when they broke down the right flank, only to knocked on just as they were about to touch down over the line.
Chorley were put under a lot of pressure in the dying minutes, but their defence stood strong for the win.
Chorley first team player Nick Sargeant said: “It was a great performance by the lads and we lost our captain Ross Beasley after 17 minutes with a knee injury.
“Then Mark Brook and our stand-in skipper Ben Renton were sin-binned, but we did well to keep it 3-3 at half time.
“Ringo Wu put in an exceptional performance at the breakdown and it was good to get a win under our belt.”
Elsewhere, the 2nd team recorded a 46-0 win over Bolton 3rd team in the University of Salford League Division Five.
