Tom heads back to roots

A professional footballer from Chorley is returning to his roots in a bid to progress in his sporting career.

Striker Tom Cahill, from Astley Village, is set to end his two-year association with Coca Cola League Two club Rotherham United at the end of the month.

Despite several clubs registering an interest in signing the former Runshaw College student, he is eager to return home and play for Blue Square North clubs.

He said: "I am still training at Rotherham United until July 1 but after that I want to move back to Chorley.

"My friends and family are all there and it has been a bit difficult being on the other side of the country when your girlfiend lives in Lancaster.

"I am just going to have to wait and see what happens but I know that I have always scored goals at whatever club I have been with."

Cahill is currently enjoying a holiday after helping Ilkeston Town FC to promotion into the Blue Square North League via the UniBond Premier Division play-offs.

He finished the club's top-scorer with 23 goals from his 30 games which included a goal in their 4-3 semi-final win over Kendal Town.

He said: "It was great to play with Ilkeston and I won several honours including the internet supporters club player of the year and also being the top scorer.

"I managed to get hat-tricks as well against Whitby and Marine but every goal I scored felt good.

"It has been frustrating not getting the chance at Rotherham but it was a great experience to be involved in a promotion campaign.

"Ilkeston wanted me to stay and also Alfreton were interested but there are quite a few league and non-league clubs closer to home who I might get a chance at."

Cahill believes he can still play at the highest level despite being prepared to join non-league clubs.

He said: "I am looking at getting a job two or three days a week so that I carry on playing.

"I still have belief in my ability and that I can get more goals.

"I am only 22 and hopefully I still have a long career ahead of me."
