Villa are tops

Euxton Villa manager Mark McDonnell has thrown down the gauntlet to his side to win the West Lancashire League team of the month in March.

The Runshaw Hall Lane side were presented with February's award on Saturday after recording three wins and adraw in the past month.

Goals by David Heald, Elliot Dunn and Sam Bolton gave Villa a 3-1 win against Freckleton and they are now aiming high.

McDonnell said: "It has been a very strange season as we started well and our expectations were high.

"But we suffered afew injuries which led to some poor results and we were staring at relegation at Christmas.

"The lads trained very hard over Christmas and then some key players came back.

"It is difficult to find aturning point but our 2-0 win against AFC

Darwen has got to be up there.

"We have also changed our formation when our leading goalscorer Matt Atherton left.

"We reverted from a 4-4-2 to 4-1-4-1 and Ire-adjusted the players

around that.

"It is great to win the award but I told the players that we have to

make sure Fred Yates from the West Lancashire League comes back here in April."

Despite being out of the reckoning for the league title McDonnell says there is alot to play for.

"We could decide the destination of it (the league) because we have to play the top teams," he said.

"We take on Garstang home and away and also face Blackpool Wren Rovers and Charnock Richard.

"I think atop six finish is achievable but it would be disappointing

by our standards.

"However, we still need a few wins as we are not totally out of

relegation danger yet.

"We are also in the league cup quarter-finals against Lostock St

Gerrards and that competition will be our last hope of silverware this

year."
