A 'well-loved' Lancashire landmark has taken pride of place in a new spot this week to make way for a major road revamp.

The Centurian Tank at the Flensburg Way roundabout, in Farington, was moved ahead of the A582 roadworks.

The iconic 50 tonne tank was hoisted by a large crane onto a mound 20m back from its old spot on ‘Tank roundabout’.

Councillor Graham Walton, of Farington Parish Council and South Ribble Borough Council, was pleased when he went to see the tank in its new spot.

He said: “It will just be as substantial to the entrance of South Ribble as it was before.

“Once the roadworks done it will look absolutely tremendous... it will be an asset to us.”

The move was necessary to enable the next stage of road improvements to add more lanes to the roundabout.

The county council began work on the A582 last year to reduce delays across South Ribble and in and out of Preston.

This is one of four major road schemes included in the Preston, South Ribble and Lancashire City Deal.

Phill Wilson, manager of the project, said: “We’ve done our best to move this well-loved landmark with the minimum of disruption to the public.

“It’s not every day you have to move a Centurion tank but I’m pleased to say that everything went very smoothly.”
