LIGHTS, camera, action! Film buffs rolled up in their droves to watch the silver screen from their cars this weekend.

For the very first time, the Chorley Carnival Committee organised a spectacular, 30ft American-style drive-in movie screen to be erected in the grounds of Botany Bay in a bid to raise funds for this year’s festivities. The packed out event saw musicals Grease and Mamma Mia entertain the crowds with family favourites Monsters University and Despicable Me 2 also shown over the two day event.

Chairman of the committee, Paul Wilkins, said the event was a rare treat for movie lovers after years hoping to bring a drive-in event to the town. He said: “It has been a recurring idea to organise a drive-in cinema over the years.

“It was a mammoth effort to get the screen, projector and film permissions but we got there in the end.”

Paul said Grease was a real crowd pleaser. He said: “We even had a couple of groups dress up as the Pink Ladies and everybody got up and dancing between the cars during the musical numbers.

“It was great fun, people came prepared with cushions, sleeping bags and picnics and tooted their horns and flashed their lights at specific moments.”

The annual carnival event, which raises money for local charities, takes over £20,000 to stage every year. And as well as the drive-in movie, a duck race will take place in Adlington at Easter as well as a food festival in Chorley this May.

Paul said: “We had a strong team of volunteers to marshall the event, it’s not like having a torch to take people to their seats, cars are a little harder to manoeuvre.

“But everyone commented that it was such a great experience so who knows, it might make a return.”
