September sees the first appearance of popular duo Winter Wilson at the Gregson Lane Folk Club in Hoghton.

Following on from a triumphant summer of festival appearances by the pair, they will come to the club on Thursday, September 3.

Known across the UK acoustic music scene for their fine original songs, stunning harmonies and spontaneous, off-the-wall humour, Lincolnshire-based Winter Wilson are rapidly building a loyal following.

After playing together for almost 20 years, Kip and Dave Wilson took the plunge in 2012, giving up full-time “proper jobs” to make their living from their music.

They have since established their own cottage industry, writing songs, recording, designing album covers, promotion, setting up tours and spending most of the year living in a camper van.

As a result their reputation has blossomed, seeing them playing clubs and festivals all over the UK.

Their music covers a range of styles, mainly with a folk-blues feel.

But it’s their live performances that have really set this pair apart, bringing passion, intelligence, humour and ‘refreshing undertones of dry rebellion’ to every gig.

Kip Winter’s voice is possibly one of the best in the business, delivering power and emotion in equal measure (described by one promoter as “from melting to belting”).

In the past she has sung everything from jazz to opera, but is at her best and happiest when singing folk and blues.

Originating from the
Outer Hebrides (though raised in Holland), Kip brings a wealth of folk history and stories from the Islands, together with a broader, blues-based approach to much of the duo’s music.

She also plays piano accordion, flute, and occasional guitar.

Songwriter Dave Wilson is now recognised as one of the best on the English acoustic scene, with his songs covered by some of folk’s greats including Vin Garbutt.

His lyrics are thought-provoking, often challenging, but always beautifully crafted. Add to this a mellow, relaxed singing style and some mean guitar playing.

Gregson Lane Folk Club meets at 8.30pm on alternate Thursdays at Nets Bar, Gregson Lane, Hoghton, providing a platform for live acoustic music.

Tickets for this event, priced at £7, may be purchased on the door.
