Genre benders King Champion Sounds head up an electric eclectic night at The Ferret in Preston’s Fylde Road this Sunday.
Anglo-Dutch outfit King Champion Sounds are the brainchild of guitarist Ajay Saggar (once of Preston psychedelic favourites Dandelion Adventure) with vocals courtesy of G.W. Sok (The Ex).
The seven-piece line-up is completed by a stellar second guitar player, bass, drums, and two horn players.
Pundits have struggled and failed to pin down the King Champion Sound, with references to The Fall, swing-era horns, Beefheart, PiL, Can, Sun Ra, Morricone and the sounds of a Moroccan souk abounding.
In the summer of 2013, after hearing recordings for King Champion Sounds’ debut album, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs asked them to be the support act at their sold out Paradiso Amsterdam show.
Whatever the blether, King Champion Sounds are fantastic freaks, a band with real presence and authority, an astonishing sound – shuddering, rumbling bass , clattering guitar and a soothing, life affirming soul revue/Dexys feel from the horns – and the songs to match.
Support on the night comes from Interrobang, an agitpunkfunkstorm featuring two former members of Chumbawamba.
“An angular assault course of taut techpop, agonised surging urgency, vigour and vim. Pulsating present intense intravenous Interrobang,” said a spokesman for the and.
Preston band Komodo, featuring former members of Cornershop, make up a scintillating bill.
Doors 8pm, tickets £5 in advance. See theferret.info/ for further information.
